National Research Centre for Camels
Camels have been a prominent part of Bikaner’s economy and identity for centuries. They were used as pack animals for commercial caravans, provided logistical support for the military, and formed the backbone of agrarian peasant societies. To conserve this heritage, Bikaner hosts the only camel research and breeding farm in India, known as the National Research Centre on Camels.
The centre is dedicated to breeding, health, nutrition, and conservation of native camel varieties. It has also actively marketed camel milk and products from camels, which promotes a sustainable desert ecology. The institute reflects the town’s desire to conserve traditional knowledge, not to substitute for ill-suited development models.
