Lallgarh (Lalgarh) Palace, Bikaner
Lallgarh Palace is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture that embodies the modernity of Bikaner’s royal heritage, commissioned at the end of the 20th century. Built of red sandstone, the palace is a mix of Rajput, Mughal, and European elements where carved jharokhas, latticed screens, monumental stairways, and grand courtyards find a balance between ornament and scale.
A royal residence, Lallgarh illustrates the way the colonial landscape could offer ceremonial and representational spaces, in fitting with the needs of diplomacy and princely lifestyle in the colonial ear. Today, the palace stands as a potent optic of the transformation of Bikaner from martial desert kingdom to cosmopolitan princely state.
