Deogarh Frescoes

Fresco Paintings
The unique signature of Deogarh Palace is the fresco paintings, which serves as the backbone of the famous Deogarh school of painting. Palace interiors are transformed into a continuous painted story, frescoes swathing walls, ceilings, corridors, and chambers. Shockingly, despite centuries of exposure, the vibrancy of the colors makes the paintings look crispier, with very few remnants of tarnish, the paintings were executed using natural pigments from minerals, plants and earth. The themes are diverse– Ramayana episodes, Krishna as Kanhaiya, royal processions, courtiers, festivals, hunting scenes, and life inside the palace.

These frescoes are more than decoration. They serve as historical and cultural records, showcasing past societal structures, religious devotion, dress, architecture, music, and ceremony. The correlation between divine sanction and royal authority among the Rajputs is often visually articulated by depicting gods and kings within a single frame. Her compositions are both elaborate and refined, with no superfluous details but layered with narrative. In these paintings we see Deogarh Palace not simply as a home, but as a repository of belief, power, and identity.
