Hathi Bhata

Hathi Bhata

Hathi Bhata
Hathi Bhata or Elephant Stone, is a rock formation carved out into the shape of an elephant in a sitting position close to Amer. The sculpture dates from the reign of Sawai Jai Singh II and is believed to have been carved from a single stone in the early 1700s.
The structure is not a place of worship but rather seems to have served as a symbolic, perhaps even a commemorative landmark along the ancient road to Amer Fort. Its simplicity and grand scale are indicative of the period’s focus on monumental shapes over ornamentation. Hathi Bhata, however, is often ignored despite being close to other great monuments.
