Gonbo Rangjon

Gonbo Rangjon

Leaving Phugtal behind, we continued towards Shingo La, where one of Ladakh’s most iconic natural landmarks awaited us. Rising dramatically from the valley floor, Gonbo Rangjon is a solitary mountain unlike any other in the Himalayas. Standing apart from the surrounding

ranges, its dark rocky slopes create an almost perfectly symmetrical pyramid that dominates the landscape from every direction.

For local Buddhists, Gonbo Rangjon is far more than a mountain. It is regarded as a sacred peak associated with Mahakala, the powerful protector deity known in Tibetan Buddhism as Gonpo. Pilgrims have long considered the mountain a place of immense spiritual energy, and many offer prayers as they pass through the valley.

As we approached, the mountain appeared to grow larger with every kilometre. Unlike the snow-covered peaks surrounding it, Gonbo Rangjon possesses a powerful presence that is difficult to describe. Its isolated position against the vast Himalayan sky creates one of the most striking landscapes in Ladakh.

We stopped for a long time simply to admire the view. Prayer flags danced in the wind, streams flowed through the valley below, and the silence of the mountains made the experience feel almost meditative. It was easy to understand why photographers, pilgrims, and travellers alike regard Gonbo Rangjon as one of the most unforgettable landmarks in Zanskar.

As we continued our journey towards Shingo La, the valley became increasingly wild and dramatic. The road climbed steadily through rugged mountain scenery, leaving behind monasteries and villages that have preserved centuries of Himalayan history.

This route through Bardan, Purne, Phugtal, and Gonbo Rangjon is much more than a collection of destinations. Together, they tell the story of a landscape shaped equally by faith, isolation, and nature. Ancient monasteries continue to serve their communities, villages still depend on glacier-fed rivers, and sacred mountains remain places of pilgrimage and reverence.

Between towering cliffs, sacred caves, rushing rivers of this part of Zanskar, and timeless monasteries, we found one of the most extraordinary chapters of our journey through Ladakh.
