Kanji Rong

Kanji Rong

Beyond Lamayuru, as the Srinagar–Leh Highway begins its steady ascent, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. One of the most striking viewpoints along this stretch is Kanji Rong, a breathtaking overlook that opens onto the vast Kanji Valley, one of Ladakh’s most remote and pristine regions. From here, layers of rugged mountains, deep gorges, and winding riverbeds stretch endlessly towards the horizon, creating a landscape that feels untouched by time. Kanji Rong reveals a harsher yet equally captivating side of Ladakh, where nature dominates every aspect of the terrain.

The valley below leads to the isolated village of Kanji, one of the last permanent settlements before the high mountains of Zanskar. For centuries, these valleys served as seasonal routes for traders, shepherds, and pilgrims travelling between Ladakh and Zanskar. Today, Kanji is better known among trekkers as the starting point for the challenging Kanji La Trek, which

crosses high mountain passes, glacial streams, and remote alpine meadows before descending into the heart of Zanskar. Despite its growing popularity among adventure enthusiasts, the region has retained its sense of solitude, with only a handful of villages scattered across the vast landscape.

Standing at Kanji Rong, it is easy to appreciate the immense scale of the Himalayas. The constantly changing colours of the mountains, the crisp mountain air, the silence broken only by the wind, and the panoramic views make it a memorable stop along the journey. For us, Kanji Rong was more than just a viewpoint; it was a reminder of how diverse Ladakh’s landscapes truly are. Within a single day’s drive, the region transforms from fertile river valleys and ancient monasteries to remote mountain wilderness, offering a glimpse into one of the least explored corners of the Indian Himalayas.
