Khardung Village

Khardung Village

A few kilometres below the pass lies Khardung Village, one of the oldest settlements on this historic trade route. Merchants carrying silk, tea, spices, wool, and precious stones would stop here to rest before crossing the high mountains. The village prospered because of this trade, serving as an important halt for both traders and their animals.

Today, Khardung Village remains a peaceful settlement surrounded by fields of barley, willow trees, and traditional Ladakhi homes. Stone walls, whitewashed houses, and small Buddhist shrines preserve the character of a village that has changed little despite modern tourism.

As we wandered through its quiet lanes, it was easy to imagine the bustling caravans that once paused here after crossing the high pass. Walking through the narrow lanes offers a glimpse into everyday life in Ladakh, where agriculture still plays an important role despite the harsh climate.

These additions are intentionally subtle, they make the article feel like it comes from someone who actually travelled the route, while preserving the historical and journalistic style you’ve established throughout your Ladakh series.
