Likir Monastery

Likir Monastery

About 15 kilometres from Alchi lies Likir Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries belonging to the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Established in the 11th century and later rebuilt in the 18th century, Likir is best known for its towering 25-metre gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley.

Visible from a considerable distance, the statue symbolises hope and the future coming of the Buddha. Inside the monastery are beautifully preserved assembly halls, ancient manuscripts, statues, thangkas, and prayer wheels that continue to serve the resident monks. Comment Highlight: The monastery also plays an important role in preserving Ladakhi Buddhist traditions through religious education, annual festivals, and cultural ceremonies. The drive to Likir passes through quiet villages and fields, offering excellent opportunities to observe rural Ladakhi life.
