Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill

One of the first attractions on the route is Magnetic Hill, a place that has intrigued travellers for decades. A marked stretch of road appears to defy gravity, as vehicles placed in neutral seem to roll uphill on their own.

While local folklore attributes the phenomenon to magnetic forces, scientists explain it as an optical illusion created by the surrounding terrain. The landscape makes the downward slope appear like an uphill gradient, tricking the human eye.

Whether viewed as science or mystery, Magnetic Hill has become one of Ladakh’s most popular roadside stops. Visitors often park their vehicles to experience the illusion firsthand while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Indus Valley.
