Namgyal Tsemo Monastery

Namgyal Tsemo Monastery

Perched even higher above Leh Palace is Namgyal Tsemo Monastery, a landmark visible from almost every corner of the town. The monastery was founded in 1430 by King Tashi Namgyal, nearly two centuries before the construction of Leh Palace.

The monastery is particularly known for its three-storey-high gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the Future. It also has ancient manuscripts, murals, and Buddhist scriptures preserved within its prayer halls.

From below, the monastery appears almost inseparable from the rocky mountain on which it stands. Prayer flags stretch across the ridge, while the white structure contrasts sharply against the rugged brown cliffs. Its elevated position once served not only religious purposes but also allowed watchmen to observe approaching trade caravans and potential invaders.

Together with Leh Palace, Namgyal Tsemo creates one of the most recognisable skylines in Ladakh.
