Leaving Purne behind, we followed the trail towards Phugtal Monastery. One of the most memorable parts of this journey is crossing the bridges spanning the Tsarap River.
For many years, visitors reached the monastery by crossing a narrow suspension bridge that swayed gently above the rushing waters below. The walk across the old bridge was an adventure in itself, offering spectacular views of the gorge while reminding us how isolated the monastery once was. Older travellers often speak of this crossing as one of the defining moments of visiting Phugtal. Landslides and floods have repeatedly damaged access routes in this valley, leading to improvements in the crossing over time.
Today, a newer bridge provides safer and more reliable access while preserving the dramatic experience of approaching the monastery on foot. As we crossed the river, the roar of the water echoed beneath us, and towering cliffs surrounded the narrow valley on every side. Looking ahead, we caught our first glimpse of Phugtal Monastery clinging to the cliff face— one of the most unforgettable sights in all of Ladakh.
