Old Palace of Zangla

Old Palace of Zangla

Standing high on a rocky outcrop above the village, the Old Palace of Zangla is one of the most significant reminders of Zanskar’s royal past. Once the residence of the kings of Zangla, the centuries-old palace commanded sweeping views of the surrounding valley and occupied a strategic position that allowed its rulers to oversee important routes through the region.

Although much of the structure has weathered with time, its mud-and-stone walls continue to reflect the ingenuity of traditional Himalayan architecture. The palace is also closely associated with the Zangla royal lineage, which, according to local Buddhist tradition, is believed to continue through reincarnations of Bhakula Rinpochey, who is a reincarnation of Arhat Bakula, one of the 16 disciples of Buddha.

Members of the royal family have long been regarded with deep respect, and the belief that the lineage endures through reincarnated heirs reflects the close relationship between

temporal authority and Buddhist spiritual traditions in Zanskar. Standing beside the ancient ruins, we found ourselves reflecting on the centuries of history, faith, and local legends that continue to surround this remarkable landmark.
