Yugar Village

Yugar Village

Further along the valley, we reached Yugar Village, another small settlement that beautifully reflects Zanskar’s traditional lifestyle.

Surrounded by cultivated fields and snow-covered peaks, Yugar immediately felt peaceful. The village is considerably quieter than many destinations visited by tourists, making it an ideal place to observe everyday life without distraction.

Walking through its narrow pathways, we passed traditional homes, small prayer walls, and carefully maintained irrigation channels carrying glacier meltwater towards nearby fields. Families were busy tending crops, while livestock grazed peacefully nearby.

We found ourselves slowing down simply to appreciate the surroundings. The contrast between lush green farmland and the towering barren mountains beyond is one of Zanskar’s defining characteristics. It is difficult not to pause frequently to admire the scenery, where every direction offers another spectacular Himalayan panorama.

Villages like Yugar remind visitors that Zanskar’s greatest treasures are not always its monuments but the communities that have preserved their culture despite centuries of geographical isolation.
