Pavagadh Fort

Pavagadh Fort

Soaring high above the plains close to Baroda is Pavagadh Fort, one of the area’s most remarkable historical sites. The fort is built on a volcanic hill. Pavagadh hill has been occupied for centuries and was used as a natural fort by different rulers. Walls, gates and ruins covered various levels of the hill, testifying to different eras from Rajput control through Gujarat Sultanate.

This fort was strategically located, so that the rulers could control significant trade routes throughout the region. Gradually, the town around the settlement flourished in the fifteenth century.
