Bhuj fort

The remains of Bhuj Fort still surround parts of the old city. These defensive walls once formed a complete ring around Bhuj, protecting it from external threats. Several large gateways connected the city with nearby settlements and trade routes.

Over time the fortifications were reinforced as the kingdom faced conflicts with neighbouring powers. The most important defensive structure was built on Bhujia Hill itself. From this elevated position the Bhujia Fort guarded the capital and allowed soldiers to monitor the surrounding plains.

Bhujia Hill witnessed several historic battles, including conflicts between the Jadeja rulers and Mughal forces during the eighteenth century. From the summit, troops could observe approaching enemies and quickly prepare their defenses.

Although earthquakes over the centuries damaged parts of the old city walls, several gateways and sections of the fortifications survived. They remain reminders of a time when Bhuj stood as a fortified capital in a politically contested landscape.
