Modern history added another significant chapter to the story of Bhuj. On 26 January 2001 a powerful earthquake struck the Kutch region, causing widespread destruction across Bhuj and surrounding towns. Thousands of buildings collapsed and many lives were lost.
To honour the victims and commemorate the resilience of the people who rebuilt the region, the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial was constructed on Bhujia Hill.
The memorial complex includes exhibitions explaining the science of earthquakes, the sequence of events during the 2001 disaster and the massive reconstruction effort that followed.
Photographs, interactive displays and personal stories help visitors understand both the scale of the tragedy and the determination of the community to rebuild their city. From its hilltop location the memorial overlooks the rebuilt city of Bhuj, symbolising both loss and renewal.
