Porbandar: A Small Coastal Town Shaped a Global Conscience
Located on the west coast of India, by the convergence of sea and land along Gujarat’s Kathiawar coast, Porbandar is a small city. Porbandar, formerly known as Sudamapuri after Lord Krishna´s childhood friend Sudama, was a prosperous port town for centuries. Here, merchants set out for Arabia and East Africa with cotton, spices, and carved stone. Porbandar’s long shoreline and nautical past aside, this city is undeniably better known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2,1869 into a modest ancestral house in the old quarter of this city. The house is today at the centre of Kirti Mandir, Porbandar’s most iconic landmark and a place where millions across the globe come to pay their respect.
